The Missions of Rootless

One thing that's always been a bit of a pet peeve of mine with tactical RPGs is the lack of variety in missions.  They all seem to be some variant of "kill all the bad guys", "kill a specific bad guy" or "protect someone by killing all the people trying to hurt them".  Perhaps there's a reason for this, i.e. maybe it's too difficult to balance or implement other mission types, and I'll soon learn that lesson.  But until then, here's a list of planned mission types for Rootless!

  1. Plant & Defend
    1. You're tasked with transporting something to a specific location on the map, setting it there (via an action) and then defending it for a set number of turns.  The immediate thing that comes to mind is a bomb, set to sabotage something, but this could be other things as well; perhaps your assisting in an experiment collecting data
    2. The character that has the "package" will likely be encumbered in some way; maybe they can't attack or perform actions that require their hands (since they're carrying something)
  2. Escort
    1. You're tasked with protecting a unit or units until they're able to traverse the map.  Maybe it's something like a vehicle (i.e. carriage with a VIP inside) or a group of civilians or nobles, or just an individual VIP.  They likely won't be able to defend themselves well, and will move slowly to make the mission a bit more difficult
  3. Endure
    1. Survive a certain number of rounds against increasingly difficult waves of enemies (horde mode!)
  4. Recover Item
    1. It's up to you to find, take, and leave with a specific item on the map.  The exact location of the item may not be known, and it may be held by a specific unit
    2. This may also introduce the concept of "stealth", where your characters start unseen until discovered
  5. Traverse
    1. Get from point A to point B (and maybe point C?) on a map while being pursued.  The map will likely have some hinderances built in to make it more interesting/difficult than just a movement exercise
  6. Gather
    1. Collect items from one or more locations on the map and place them at a central location
    2. This mission type reminds me of the "find the gas cans and fuel the car" style missions from Left4Dead
  7. Capture the Flag
    1. I haven't yet thought of a good narrative reason for this mission type, but a classic Capture the Flag style game should be fun!
  8. Occupy
    1. Hold a position/positions on the map for a certain # of rounds.  This will likely require/feature units that can force your player characters to move
  9. Destroy Spawns
    1. Destroy the map locations that will continue to spew out enemy units until they're eliminated
  10. Light Beacons
    1. A variant of some of the other mission types already mentioned, player units will have to go to specific map locations and perform an action there, defending those points until all the locations are activated
  11. Rescue
    1. Similar to Recover, except you're to rescue a unit from a location on the map and then escort them away

I think these have a lot of promise and provide a way to keep the game fresh and engaging!
